2011 Mercedes Benz Silver Arrow Concept
Mercedes Silver Arrow Concept
The vehicle created by Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design of North America for the 2011 LA Design Challenge is a futuristic racing car inspired by the W125 series from the 1930s and by sci-fi movies.
The Silver Arrow Concept is the protagonist of an original sci-fi story titled "Silver Lightining" wheretwo enlightened crash test mannequins, Hans05 and Franz02, fight against the evil battering ram Dr. Crash-Barrier in an "action packed thrill ride through the past and future of transportation".
During a crash test, the test dummies decide to save the car – and themselves – from destruction; they take control of the Silver Arrow and run away, chased by the battering ram vehicle.
As the story rolls on, a classic W165 Silver Arrow is brought on the scene from a Museum and helps the main characters in their escape, until the happy ending.
Paying homage to the company's 125th anniversary, the Silver Arrow Concept combines several design influences.
In addition to the Mercedes-Benz heritage – represented by the W125 racing car series and by the SLR models from the 1950s – the car adopts some of the contemporary styling cues of the brand – in particular the front grille – and showcases influences from recent sci-fi movies.
These are visible – for example – in the distinctive light strips and the hubless wheels, both reminiscent of the "Tron: Legacy", while the colorful, sleek environments and designs bring to the mind scenes from "Star Wars – Episode II" and "I, Robot".
The car also features some futuristic technologies, such as the Omni-Directional roller tracks and a "Mag-Tech" roof system with lightweight magnetic surfaces rapidly arranged to form a solid roof surface or hidden away to transform the car into a convertible.
The inspiration from the world of movies is also visible in the way the project was developed and presented: the initial exploratory sketches were translated into full illustrations, that mimic the style of the artworks created by concept artists working in the entertainment industry, and form an actual storyboard that tells the story and provides a clear vision of the atmosphere and design of the "film".

Press release
In homage to 125 years of automotive innovation and design excellence, Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design of North America features a story with two techno characters that have achieved a unique harmony between safety and style; the iconic Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow racecar, and the underappreciated 'Crash test dummy.'
In a futuristic society of increased artificial intelligence, two enlightened crash test mannequins, Hans05 and Franz02, show that they're no dummies when it comes to recognizing a potential catastrophe and decide to take matters into their own hands.
As the evil battering ram Dr. Crash-Barrier seeks to continue his reign of terror and mayhem, the two heroes take action to save their beloved Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow.
They lead the relentless 'Dr. Barrier' on an action packed thrill ride through the past and future of transportation.
A long-slung, sculpture on wheels – actually on 'Hoops' – the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow has proportions reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz W125 series, a Silberpfeil racecar of the late 1930's and the Uhlenhaut SLR from the 50's.
The overall shape follows distinguished Mercedes-Benz design traditions and is born from a dominant Formula 1 racing legacy.
It also features a diagonally configured, hub-less roller track for 'Omni-Directional' maneuvering.
Brought to you by the creators of 'Biome, a car grown from trees', this epic adventure has it all, including a surprise ending that will have audiences cheering as our reluctant heroes save the day with a little old- school subterfuge and help from the great tradition of the Mercedes-Benz automobiles.
