My freind has a 2007 Vulcan 1600 classic and When it gets hot It loses its Hydro clutch and the bike stalls. If you pump up the clutch you can get it to work but then It goes away again after not using it. I blead the clutch and removed a good amount of air from the line but It happened again after that, also once the bike is hot it will not start. you can hear the fuel pump prime when you turn on the key but it will just crank. did any body else come across this problems with the bike . Trying to fix this for my freind.

the clutch slave cylinder is attached to the bevel gear drive. There have been instances of the bevel gear overheating and boiling the clutch fluid. Next time it goes for a short ride, check the heat around the left rear engine side cover. Be careful, if it is overheating, it would be hot enough to burn your hand.

When you say the bike will not start when hot, does the engine crank but not fire? or just not crank?

First thank you for your reply and the bike will crank but no fire. After sitting for about 5 min it will have a initial fire but not stay running

thats a strange problem for fuel injected. have you checked the coolant levels? is the bike getting really unbearably hot? what about oil level and quality? low or old oil will increase engine heat.

how many miles on the engine? over 30,000 and I would suggest new spark plugs.

I am going to see what the temps are when it happens and also see if he has spark at that time. So I can narrow it down some.

In the bottom of the master cylinder is a larger hole that replenishes the fluid, there is also a small hole (closer to the banjo fitting) that releases the fluid in the line when the clutch lever is released, allowing the slave cylinder to fully engage the clutch. Make sure that hole is not plugged. If it is when the bike gets hot the pressure will be too much and the bike will not start. also bled the line again and check for leaks. May be it will work but if not a least you know where to start.

Fix the clutch first by starting with the master cylinder check, then tackle the hot start problem.
They may/may not be related.
It is time for a fluid flush in both brake and clutch systems if it has not been done recently.

Hey all.....thanks for the great advice you gave my friend about my bike here. I changed the oil about 3500 miles ago, the radiator had a leak that we fixed so that has all new coolant, only about 2 months old. The engine is not getting very hot, as in the light never comes on and the fan only comes on at unusually long lights. I purchased the bike used with 40,000 miles on it, and dont know when the plugs were changed, so I am going to do that. I wonder if I should go ahead and change out the slave cylinder ???
Seems to be logically what all the symptoms of the clutch point to.
I dont know if the stalling / hard restart thing is related to the clutch thing.
There is also a rattle under the tank on hard acceleration, but only when the engine is warm (10 mins into a ride) and only when in gear (cant get it to do it just revving in neutral). I thought valves, but they are hydraulic valve, according to my service manual.
Any other ideas?
I think if I cant figure this out it would be best to take it to a bike shop.....but hate admitting defeat!!!
Thanks in advance

Did you get the clutch fixed?
The knocking you hear could be detonation. That is a subject by itself to tackle if the clutch is fixed.

so this morning me and my freind Keith went for a ride to check out his bike. and It was making a clanging sound from the engine and when we stopped and shut it off it was not starting so I started to check things out. found the cover on the right side that covers the throttle body's was not sealed against the base. The part of the base where the cover screws on to was pushed out, so I got the base to go back in where it was supposed to be and screwed the cover back on and the bike started back up, we did a Poker run today and we had no Problems with the bike. I belive that the cover being out of wack let to much air into the intake system and ran the bike lean, Which heated it up and caused all other Problems. The rattle noise is now gone and No clutch Problem either. He is going to ride it for a longer ride tommorow to check everything out..

Ok well The bike is now Leaking oil from the seal Behind the clutch slave cylinder, I put this seal back in place once already and put some Hi temp RTV on it to try to keep it in place but it came out again. What is the Best way to repair this ? New Seal?
